dogs and cat asleep in chair

Since February is Responsible Pet Owners Month here are some tips for keeping your pets happy.

We sometimes think our pets are happy sleeping wherever they might land, eating wherever we decide is best, and a whole host of other things that we determine for them.  When thinking about your pets’ environment and their comfort, consider things from their perspective (these are just a few small examples, you’ll be able to come up with many more):

1. Just like all of us, a cat or dog will be happier with a warm, toasty bed in the winter. Who wants to sleep on a cold floor?

2. Food and water bowls should be at the right height for your pet. Not only is this more comfortable, but it can help eliminate certain health concerns. Why would a Golden Retriever ever eat from a bowl that is the same height as one that you might use for a Toy Poodle?

3. Buy toys that fit your pets’ personalities and needs. For example, if you have a breed of working dog (like any Shepherd dog), give them a toy that requires them to do some work (Kong’s and food puzzles are a great example). It will help satisfy their innate need for physical and mental stimulation.

4.  Keep in mind that you pets need social contact, play time with their owners and interesting things to do.

Always remember, the most important thing is to LOVE your pet.
